The Obituary

Peggie Jean Black Henry was born on September 4, 1937 in Thomasville, North Carolina to Gladys Lucretia Black and George Primer. Life’s earthly journey came to a quiet close on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at her home at 210 Black Street, Thomasville, North Carolina.

Peggie attended Church Street School with the Class of 1955. She later moved to New York where she resided most of her adult life. Peggie was employed at Pilgrim State Hospital for over 35 years where she devotedly cared for patients who had mental challenges with her love and compassion. After moving back to Thomasville in the early 90’s, Peggie continued to do home healthcare in private homes. “Ms. Peggie”, as she was known by neighbors and church family, also cared for children in her home for several years.

She was a member of St. John A. M. E. Zion Church where she was founder and President of the Pastor’s Aide for several years. She formerly sang on the Senior Choir and she often rendered solos when asked.

Peggie will be fondly remembered first and foremost for her love and devotion to her sons, Kenny and Ray. Her past times include watching her “soaps”, working in her flower garden and caring for her pets, Gee-Gee and Mee-Mee.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Kenneth Henry of the home and Ravenel Henry and wife Lihui of Winston-Salem; grandson Christopher Henry of Greensboro, NC; step grandchildren Monica Holland, Lisa Henry and Dan LiHui; one aunt Hilda Black David of Columbia, SC and one uncle Floyd E. Black of Bronx, NY; cousins Marc C. (Yvette) David, Lawrence K. David, Donald J. Motley, Sr., Donald J. (Stephanie) Motley, Jr., Jerry (Vivian) Black, Johnny (Lena) Black, LaDonna M. David, Lark C. Chalmers, Esterita Carolina, Joletha Strong and Adell (George) Morris and Brenda Black McMillian; special godchildren Emily “Nikki” Bailey, Sharon Hardee and Makayla Leak and a host of relatives, friends and her church family.
