Opah Allen Gillespie began this earthly journey on September 8, 1931 to the late Allen and Emma Steele Gillespie in Harmony, North Carolina. He entered into God’s heavenly gates on May 30, 2016. During his life, he prided himself in being a committed husband, father, and grandfather.
Opah attended Church Street School in Thomasville, NC. In 1949 he married the late Doris Robinson. They were blessed with three children and was happily married for 57 years! In 1952 Opah joined The United States Army where he served for two years in Hawaii. He returned to Winston-Salem, NC and later moved to Thomasville, NC in 1964. As a provider he worked several jobs to ensure a strong stable home for his family. He was employed with the United States Postal Service and retired after 32 years of service. As a faithful member of Brown New Calvary, Opah proudly severed as an usher until his health declined. He was also active in the community as a Past Master of James H. Young Memorial Lodge #670 and American Legion.
Opah was proceed in death by his parents, wife, son, Opah A. Gillespie, Jr., and a daughter-in-law, Betty Mack Gillespie.
Leaving to cherish his precious memories are his son, Bryan Gillespie; daughter, Felcia Skeen both of the home; three grandchildren, Kierra Gillespie, Waltellus Weldon and LaShandria “Neecie” Gillespie; a brother, Clayton (Rosetta) Gillespie of High Point, NC; a sister, Annette Summer of Brassbury, MD; brother-in-law, Samuel Robinson; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Robinson both of Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins , other relatives and friends.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.
