Obituary

Martha Costella Sims Bowden was born on March 6, 1942 in High Point, NC to the union of John Edward Sims and Lula Mae Jackson Sims. She was educated in the High Point City Schools, graduating from William Penn High School, class of 1960. In 1973 she received her AA degree in Business Administration from Ashmore Business College.

She grew up attending Temple Memorial Baptist Church where she was a faithful and active member until her health declined. Her involvement included: playing the piano for the Sunday School, singing with the choirs, and participating in the Missionary Department.

Costella was employed with Drexel Heritage in excess of 10 years. In 1975 she joined Wachovia Bank where she was promoted to a number of positions including Senior Teller and City Vault Teller. She retired after 32 years of service. Always a hard working woman, she continued to work part-time for Food Lion, Harris Teeter and K-Mart until her health declined.

A virtuous woman, at the age of 26, she and her mother reared and nurtured her brother Thomas’ daughters, Tarzette and Elaine as their own. Costella was their example to become strong, independent and ambitious women just like she was.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Thomas Edward Sims; and her longtime companion, James Hudson.

She leaves to cherish precious memories, two daughters Elaine Sims (Alvin) Brewer, Minister Tarzette Sims (Ralph) Overton; one granddaughter, Sierra Elaine Brewer; a lifelong friend, Mary Vaughn, caregivers: Minister Lillian Johnson, Vonda Wardlaw-Pabon, Garfield Little, and Diane Linton; Elwood Bowden, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,

I have kept the faith.

Timothy 4:7
