Reflections of Life

Evelyn’s most favorite scripture comes from Psalms 23:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Evelyn Louise Johnson was born on November 9, 1962 in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Susan Ragin. After her mother’s death, Evelyn went to live with her adoptive mother, Shirley Ford. Evelyn was the youngest sibling of seven. At an early age, Evelyn was baptized and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Virginia. She attended the Hope Church in North Carolina since August 2016.

Evelyn was educated in the Paterson public school system. After graduating from John F. Kennedy High School, she furthered her studies at Bergen Community College focusing on a Nursing career. Most recently, Evelyn was employed at Walmart for the past 20 years, moving up the ranks until she became a Shift Manager. However in May 2016, Evelyn resigned from Walmart to pursue her career in Nursing once again.

Evelyn and daughter, Tamesha Harris, met and married Raymond A. Johnson, I., who she nicknamed Poindexter, on September 6, 1986 and of this union, a son was born Raymond A. Johnson, II.

Evelyn loved spending time with family and friends, cooking, listening to music, shopping and caring for her dogs, she called her babies Destiny (preceded in death 2015) and now Snow. She was a Blockbuster queen, movie buff, who enjoyed going to the theater often. She also loved to travel and as a result she became a collector of elephants with their trunks up (representing good luck). And may I mention, she was a passionate Steelers fan! Evelyn always went above and beyond to care for people, never saying “no” always willing to help others. Having a heart of gold with a caring and loving soul, Evelyn always had a friendly smile and a warm spirit that was so welcoming and loving toward everyone she met. Evelyn remained a very strong person, despite her illness, a loving wife, mother and friend to many.

On Wednesday evening, November 16, 2016 after a brief illness, Evelyn answered God’s call.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her devoted husband Raymond A. Johnson, I., (30 years), her loving daughter Tamesha Carter and son-in-law Ernest Carter; her son Raymond Johnson, II., and daughter-in-law Janelle Johnson; three grandchildren Tanai, Mario and DeVon Carter (Virginia); a loving mother, Shirley Ford (North Carolina) and adoptive parents, Mr. & Mrs. Wallace-Harris; a brother Daniel White and sister -in-law Kim White (New Jersey); four sisters, Susie Mae Green (South Carolina), Marie Nelson (Philadelphia), Rosa Bellamy (South Carolina) and Lela Mae McFadden (Maryland); sister -in- law, Diane Alexander and brother-in-law James Alexander (Georgia); sister-in-law Doris A. Burrell; a brother-in-law Louis S. Burrell who preceded in death (New Jersey); five nieces Danielle Nicole Moore (New Jersey), Turkessia White (South Carolina), LaTasha Charles (South Carolina), Shena Nelson (Philadelphia), Chandra Canty (Pittsburgh); three nephews Timothy Green (New Jersey), Samuel Green (South Carolina), Eric White (South Carolina), John Canty (Philadelphia), Anthony Canty (Philadelphia), Willie Orlando Green (South Carolina), Denzel Burrell (Arizona); Reuel Alexander Moore (New Jersey), Eric Burrell and Aniya Rodriquez-Burrell (New Jersey); a best friend for life, Judy Campbell (South Carolina); a loving friend Sophia Campbell (Arizona), and a host of aunt’s, uncle’s, great nieces; great nephews, cousins and friends.

The Broken Chain

Evelyn, little did we know that evening God was going to call your name. We loved you dearly alive and in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For a part of us went with you, the day God called you home.

You left us peaceful memories; your love will always be our guide. And though we cannot see you; you are always at our side.

Our chain is broken now and nothing seems the same, but God calls us one by one; so, the chain will link again.
