Leonard Garfield Hairston began this earthly journey on March 17, 1950 to the late Carl Maryland Hairston and Dorothy Jean Hairston in Eden North Carolina. He entered into God’s heavenly gates on January 17, 2017.

Leonard attended Rockingham County School System where he will be remembered as a great basketball player and an outstanding gymnast. In 2000 Leonard moved to Thomasville to unite with family.

Family and friends respectfully called Leonard “Sarge”. He was friendly, helpful and outgoing. Friends will always remember all the words of inspirations , and his unique sayings: “Once a man, twice a child”, “at ease” meaning to relax and enjoy the moment, and “dismissed” meaning this conversation is over and you can leave now!” Let’s not forget his dancing would always dominate the dance floors.

Leonard was proceed in death by his parents: Carl Hairston (2002) and Dorothy Jean Graves (2002), his brother: Clarence “Harpo” Hairston ( 2008), his sister Doris Jean Hampton-Jackson ( 2010), and a nephew Samuel Carlos Hairston (2014).

Leaving to cherish his precious memories are his brothers: Sedrick Hairston and Christopher Hairston both of Thomasville, NC, Homer Hairston of Roanoke VA, and Burnett (Josephine) Hairston of Shalimar, FL, a special friend Mary McKoy of Greensboro, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins , other relatives and friends.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,

I have kept the faith.
