The Obituary

If you want to know where I’m going, where I’m going soon. I’m going up yonder, I’m going up yonder to be with my Lord… As God gives me grace, I’ll run this race until I see my Savior face to face were the last words Lula Mae McGill Jefferies heard as she transitioned on February 18, 2017. She was born on November 18, 1925 to the late Fitzhugh and Rosie Reid McGill in Gaffney, South Carolina.

As a mature young lady Lula married the love of her life, the late Elmer Jefferies, Sr. in 1946. To this union seven wonderful children were born. Seeking to flourish her spiritual foundation, Lula joined Brown New Calvary Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Senior Usher Board and the Missionary Circle until her health declined. She worked as a seamstress for over 25 years before retiring.

Lula enjoyed spending time with her family, enticing them with her southern cooking. She will always be remembered for her famous lemon meringue pie and banana pudding. Reading her Bible and newspapers daily was a ritual for Lula. This was her way to have a little talk with Jesus, and staying current with the news. Her favorite shopping spot was Walmart where she would find absolutely everything she needed.

Lula was proceeded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer, Sr. a granddaughter, Keisha Jefferies; four siblings: James McGill, Fitzhugh McGill, Jr., T.G. McGill and Joe Dean McGill.

She leaves to cherish fond and precious memories to her four daughters: Mary (Thurman) Powers, Freelove (Phillip) Coleman, Priscilla (Raymond) Ross, and Shirley Davis all of Thomasville, NC; her three sons: Alton (Belinda) Jefferies, Oran (Rene’) Jefferies both of Thomasville, NC and Elmer Junior (Shahidah) Jefferies of Sterling, VA, 23 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; 3 sisters: Rosetta (Clayton) Gillespie of Jamestown, NC, Gladys (Robert) Little, Elois Rice both of Thomasville, NC; one brother, John (Wanda) McGill of Gastonia, NC, one brother - in-law, Ira (Katherine) Jefferies; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Jefferies, Wilma Lindsay, and Elizabeth McGill, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
