The Obituary

On July 31, 1959, God released an angel named Shirvey Deen Kennedy to begin her earthly journey. She was the daughter of Julia Ann “Toby” Kennedy Durant from Pinewood, South Carolina. Heaven gates swung open on March 22, 2017 to welcome her home.

After graduating from Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, South Carolina Shirvey attended Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina and High Point University, High Point, North Carolina to pursue her career as a social worker. Understanding the loyalty of sisterhood she joined the sorority of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Gamma Chapter in Sumter, South Carolina. She had a nourishing desire to assist everyone she came into contact with. She always made sure everyone had everything they needed: clothes, transportation and food. She was the World’s Best Aunt and a true brother’s keeper. Someone to always have your back.

As a young lady Shirvey accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was employed by Durham County Detention Center in Durham, North Carolina and later transferred to Rowan County Detention Center in Salisbury, North Carolina. When Shirvey was not working one of her favorite things to do was cooking and spending time with family and friends. Shirvey was a woman with few words, but she had a big heart! She was most happiest playing with the children and using her wittiest moments to make people smile and laugh. She lived freely like a mustang; just like her favorite song “Mustang Sally”. Everyone will remember her famous quote “That’s my good word”.

Shirvey was proceeded in death by two siblings: Walter Shannon, Jr., and Ethel Shannon of Pinewood, South Carolina.

Shirvey leaves to cherish loving memories to her mother, Julia “Toby” Kennedy Durant of the home, four brothers: Jimmy Kennedy of Cocoa, Fla., Rogers (Ruthie) Kennedy of Waynesville, MO, Tommy (Shirley) Kennedy and Ray Kennedy both of Thomasville, NC; four sisters, Linda (Roger) and Victoria (Billy) Jones both of Thomasville, NC, Carol Shannon of Pinewood, SC, Linda Shannon of Sumter, SC; nine adorable nieces and five special nephews, nine great–nieces and nephews, a host of aunts and uncles and other relatives and friends.
