Robert McClain Stokes Sr., 64, departed his earthly life on Friday, June 23, 2017 at his home in Thomasville. Robert was born on May 24, 1953 and was the second child born to Mary and James Stokes. Robert was born in High Point and raised in Kernersville.
Robert married the love of his life, Sylvia (Johnson) Stokes on March 31, 1979.
Robert lived in Thomasville for more than 40 years. He and Sylvia raised two children together, Robert Jr. and Alicia.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Avon. Robert is survived by his wife, Sylvia, Robert Jr. (Renee’), Alicia (Laura), and one grandchild, Adalene.
Robert graduated from Ledford High School in 1973. He went on to become one of the first African American members of the Thomasville Police Department. He was also one of the first African American deputies to serve in the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department. Robert went on to work many years for FedEx and had worked for Images of America of Thomasville since 2010.
He accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member at Clifton Grove Baptist Church in Kernersville. Robert was a member of the Deacon’s ministry. His grandparents, James and Jessie Stokes, were founding members of Clifton Grove.
Robert was a loving husband, a caring father, a very proud grand- father, and a faithful friend to all who came to know him. He had a kind and generous nature. He never encountered a stranger and would offer a helping hand to anyone that needed it. He was quick with a joke and had an uncanny ability to win people over with his infectious laugh and beautiful smile.
Robert was an avid UNC and Nascar fan and a lifelong amateur fisherman. He also loved to travel and see new places. Robert was quite handy and good at fixing things. Robert was an excellent cook and would offer to feed anyone that showed up at his door. Robert loved dogs and leaves behind his beloved 9 year old Labrador, Napoleon AKA “Nate”.
