On October 26, 1926, James Samuel Carter, Sr. was born to the late Ollie and Clara Carter in Newberry, South Carolina. He quietly transitioned from this earthly life on June 29, 2017, at his home in New Bern, North Carolina.

As a young man, James’s parents moved to Thomasville, North Carolina in 1943. In 1945 he joined The United States Army where he was stationed in Germany. James enlisted in Infantry, but within 5 months he was promoted to a heavy equipment truck driver, transporting and inspecting vehicles from Bremehaven to France. In 1946 he received his honorable discharge and returned to Thomasville where met and married the former Johnnie Mae Borders. To this union was born one son, James Samuel Carter, Jr.

James had a strong spiritual foundation. He feared the Lord. He joined Brown New Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for 52 years. James was a gentle and patient man, great provider and a hard-worker. He was employed with Thomasville Furniture Industry with over 30 years of service prior to retiring as a maintenance supervisor. James often used his craftsman skill to assist anyone in need. He was an active member of the Lions Club and a former chairman of the Human Relation Council of Thomasville, NC.

Heaven’s gates await James as he joins his parents, wife and eight siblings: Jolene Carter, Frank Carter, Glossie Carter, Alberta Hunter, Ollie Flucker, Ace Carter, Joseph Carter and Ulysses Carter.

Leaving to cherish his fond memories include his son, James Samuel (Gazelia) Carter Jr., of the home; two grandsons: James Samuel (Andrea) Carter, III and Cameron Albright Carter; one great granddaughter Maya Florence Carter; two brothers, Elbert Carter of Thomasville, and Earl (Gwendolyn) Carter of Cameron, NC; four sisters: Clara James of Patterson, NJ, Eulalia (James) Huggins of Thomasville, NC, Ethel (William) Linder of Bronx, NY, and Linda Carter of Thomasville, NC; a special friend, Ethel Rice; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
