The Journey
Mrs. Mary Gilbert Scott was born June 30, 1943 in Darlington, S.C. to the late Laney Wingate Gilbert and Dolford Gilbert, Sr. Her many friends and family knew her as “Big Mary”, and the children in the neighborhood referred to her as “Momma Mary”.
Big Mary lived in Thomasville for the past forty years and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She departed this earthly life on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at the Meridian Center in High Point. She worked 32 years at Thomas Brass Mfg. and lived a quiet life in the East End of Thomasville.
Momma Mary loved telling stories about the “good old days”. Some of her favorite movies were “The Color Purple”, “Dirty Dancing”, “Walker Texas Ranger” and “In the Heat of the Night”. Her other favorite things were chewing Double Mint gum, that little red can of designer imposter perfume “A Little Sexy”, and she did not leave home without her red lipstick.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two sons, Johnny Gilbert and Robert Ray Scott; sisters, Mariah Jackson, and Mable English.
Left to cherish her precious memories, her children; Jeffrey Gilbert, Mary Scott ( Tim) Brooks, and Eddie “Doughboy” Gilbert, Jr.; nine grandchildren: LaTonya Anderson, Brittany Curry, Cortez Williams, Domnique Lindsay, Precious Curry, Jeffrey Lee Gilbert, Jr., Jeffrey Michael Gilbert, Jeffrey “Bo” Gilbert, Jeffrika Gilbert; four great-grandchildren: Tyrin, Ti’Meria, Taszhanai, Payton (Domnique’s daughter), Peyton (Jeffrey Michael’s daughter); a sister Martha Lee Thomas; two brothers, Dolford “June” Gilbert, Jr., and Monk Gilbert; a longtime companion Charlie “Nick” Nesbitt; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. As well, a great host of nieces, nephews and cousins will forever cherish her memory.
