OBITUARY
Curtis Jerome Johnson, affectionately known by many as “Jake” was born on September 6, 1954 in Thomasville, NC to the late Jessie and Ollie Johnson. He was preceded in death by his birth and adopted parents, Jessie and Ollie Johnson and Lorena (Walter) Mitchell.
Curtis graduated from Thomasville High School in 1972, where he was co-captain of the varsity basketball team. Immediately following high school he attended Catawba College to continue to play basketball, however his college basketball career suddenly ended due to a severe knee injury. Although he didn’t discuss his love for basketball to everyone he still talked about his skills on the court.
Curtis loved his family, his church, his town and sports. He never met a stranger and everyone in Thomasville known how much he loved to talk and debate. Many will remember his as a regular uptowner always ready and willing to talk about politics, sports and his beloved family. His two heart beats were his daughter, Nikki and his granddaughter Gabbie, and if you gave his a minute, he was sure to show you a picture or share a story. Prior to his illness, he enjoyed spending time with his dear friends and working in the yard. He is a Grannytown Legend!
Surviving to cherish precious memories are his daughter, Monike (Bobby) Johnson-Hostler, granddaughter, Gabrielle Hostler all of Raleigh, NC; four siblings, Sonia Johnson and Evelyn Mitchell both of Thomasville, NC, Rudy (Marie) Mitchell of High Point, NC and Walter “Junior” Mitchell of Raleigh, NC; two special aunts, Margaret Abrams and Rosie Johnson both of Thomasville, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
