The Obituary

Della Priscilla Moore Lewis Hayes was born on October 12, 1931 in Lenoir, NC. Della who was named after her grandmother was the first child of the late Bradshaw and Evelyn Moore. She spent her early years in West Virginia living with her Aunt Sallie and Uncle George who was a Methodist minister. She graduated from Logan High School in Logan, West Virginia.

She married Richard Venton Lewis and served as a military wife for fourteen years traveling the world. Two children were born from their union, Richard Gregory and Candy Lee Lewis. Della moved to Thomasville in 1966 after the death of her husband. Her desire was to raise her children close to her mother, Evelyn.

She enrolled at Davidson County College and earned her degree in nursing. She was employed in Nursing Services and as a Psychiatric Technician at Thomasville Medical Center. She retired in 1994 after 27 years of service. Della married Nathaniel Warmoth Hayes, a childhood friend in 1992. They loved traveling and spending time with family and friends in their retirement. Della was a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church. She was active in the United Methodist Women and the Older Adults Group. She was also an active member of the Davidson County Democratic Women and the Davidson County Seniors Group. She was a former sponsor of the children at the Baptist Children’s Home, formerly known as Mills Home.

Della’s life was dedicated to helping and caring for others. She suddenly departed this earthly life on Thursday, May 31, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bradshaw and Evelyn; her first husband, Richard; her son Richard Gregory and three sisters, Josephine Champion, Gail Greeson and Bernice Barber.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years Nathaniel; her daughter, Candy L. Dingle (Willis) of Duncan, SC; a special daughter in law, Chandra Lewis of Silver Spring, MD; four step children, Nathaniel Hayes Jr. (Patricia) of Stafford, VA, Claudia Hayes Skinner (Linwood, Sr.) of Raleigh, NC, Marsha Hayes Harris of Durham, NC, Natalie Hayes Hubbard (Dietrick) of Capital Heights, MD; four grandchildren, Gina Lewis, Desmond Lewis, Asia Dingle and Logan Dingle; nine step grandchildren, Kevin Hayes, Randy Hayes (Tonya), Linwood Skinner Jr. (Tamika), Jonathan Skinner (deceased), Staci Harris, Lennis Harris Jr. (deceased), Rickayla Dixon, Ricardo Dixon and Na’Hamani Hubbard; three step great grandchildren, Cierra, Levi and Londyn Hayes. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
