Mamie Julia Edwards Burnette was born April 21, 1929 in Chapel Hill, NC and surrendered her life to God on the morning of Thursday, October 3, 2019 at the age of 90. Mamie was the daughter of the late Isaac and Mamie Edwards and to that union, Mamie and her sister Doretha were born. Mamie’s mother (Mamie) passed when she was 6 years old and her father later married Arlena Edwards and to that union, they welcomed a son Robert “Bob”.
Mamie grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and graduated from Orange County Training School, Chapel Hill, NC. Mamie worked at North Carolina Memorial Hospital as a dietitian for three years. She then worked at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar R. Ewing for 32 years until she retired in May 1992.
Mamie joined Hamlet Chapel CME Church nearly 70 years ago and has been actively working as a member since that time. Some of her noted accomplishments includes singing in the Senior and Mass Choirs, serving on the Stewardess Board, and also being a Missionary. Mamie also was a member of the OES Randolph Chapter 185 (Eastern Star), Chapel Hill, NC.
Mamie married her loving husband, Carroll E. Burnette on September 3, 1949, a union that lasted just short of 66 years. To this union, three children were born: Carol, Anthony (deceased), and Michael. Mamie was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll, on June 1, 2015 and her sister, Doretha Mason, on November 21, 2018.
Mamie had a very blessed and happy life. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, working with her many flowers, fishing, football, and basketball (cheering on the UNC Tarheels!). Mamie loved her family and especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
To cherish her legacy of love, Mamie leaves her children: Carol Hicks (Phillip), of Pittsboro, NC, Michael Burnette (Anita) of Durham, NC; brother: Robert “Bob” Edwards (Lucy) of Carrboro, NC; grandchildren: Tiona Fuller (Markus) of Leander, TX, Kevin Ellis (Annice Kim) of Durham, NC, Christopher Burnette of Alexandria, VA, and Kelly Burnette of Durham, NC; great grand-children: Jason Fuller, Cole Fuller, Naki Ellis, and Zaire Ellis; special nephew and niece: Wilbert T. Burnette (Corledia) of Pittsboro, NC and Winona J. Autry of Durham, NC; sister-in-law: Peggy Burnett of Pittsboro, NC and her beloved dog “Nikki”. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
