John Jackson was born on September 27, 1924 in Newberry, South Carolina to the proud parents of the late Sherman and Marie Higgins Jackson. After graduating from Newberry’s school system John enlisted in the United State Navy. As a chef he prepared unlimited meals for his fellow servicemen and after 20 years of dedicated service John retired. With a desire to continue to cook for others John returned to work at Walter Reed National Military Center cooking for an additional 20 years. He also was a member of American Legion Post and Fleet Reserve Association for over 25 years.
Through life’s journey John and his wife, Veronica rekindle their childhood love after 42 years apart. They relocated from Manhattan, New York to Thomasville, North Carolina to enjoy the finer things in life. Planted in his faith, he joined Brown New Calvary Baptist Church. He was a faithful member of Sunday School and Midweek Bible study. He also served as a greeter and a Missionary. John loved to visit the sick and shut-in to enlighten their souls.
John was a loving and devoted husband, father and grand-father who enjoyed spending quality time with his family. His hobbies were working in his garden, canning, watching sports and movies and cooking on his grill.
John was proceeded in death by his parents and two sisters, Azalee Wilson and Mattie Boozer.
To cherish his legacy of love, John leaves his wife, Veronica Shands Jackson of the home, two daughters, Dolores (Arthur) Dorsey of Thomasville, North Carolina and Mattie (John) Boyd of Newberry, South Carolina, grandchildren, Dawn Williams, Raymond Fant, Sharon Fant, and Deborah Wilson, brothers-in-law, Joe Wilson, Julian Swittenberg, Sr. and Ulysses Swittenberg and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
