Life's Journey
On Monday, November 18, 2019, the gates of heaven swung open to receive Jerome Vernon Long, Jr., home. "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
Jerome was the first child of the late Jerome V. Long, Sr. and Irene Carson Long. He was born on March 27, 1936, in Black Mountain, North Carolina. He received his formal education in the public schools of McDowell County, Marion, NC and Plainfield Public Schools, Plainfield, NJ. Afterward he attended Villanova University in Pennsylvania for two years. In 1956, he was drafted into the United State Army, where he served for two years as a serviceman.
Jerome accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. He continued to build his spiritual foundation by reading and studying the Word of God. He read the Daily Guide Post everyday. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Christian Methodist Episcopal Church where he served as a leader, mentor and trustee for over 30 years. Jerome’s footprints has impacted several lives. He exemplified a true man of God. He was committed to following God, abiding in the Word, practicing spiritual discipline, and faithfully loving his church family and beyond. He was also a proud member of Durham Chapter National Epicureans Inc.
On April 14, 1972, he was united in holy matrimony to Joyce Humphrey Wormack Long in South Plainfield, New Jersey. They relocated to North Carolina in 1987, after he retired from Helen Elliott Candy Company with twenty-five years of service as a production manager.
The ‘Candy Man’, ‘Romie’, or ‘Jerry’ as he was affectionately called by family and friends, will be remembered as a family oriented, loving, caring, protective and a distinguished man of honor. He took great pride in caring for the home and yard. His love for traveling allowed him to see the world. During his leisure time Jerome enjoyed watching sports especially, his favorite team, the New York Giants , and his western movies.
Jerome was preceded in death by both his parents; step-mother, Eloise Long, and one brother, William Long.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 47 years, Joyce Long, two sons, Craig (Tracy) Wormack of Brostow, VA and Corey (Christine) Wormack of Colorado Springs, CO; six grandchildren, Gabrielle Wormack, Crystal Wormack, Craig Wormack, Jr., Vanessa Wormack, Bethany Wormack and Calleigh Wormack; one brother, William Edward Long of Marion, NC; one sister, Carol Richardson of Upper Marlboro, MD; two aunts, Iris Layne of Durham, NC, and Belle (Julian) Syphax of West Palm Beach, FL and a host nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
