Obituary

Betty Jean Kirkland Lewis passed on to glory on April 7, 2020. She was born in Thomasville, NC on January 17, 1940 to the late Columbus and Mary Kirkland.

Mrs. Lewis graduated from Church Street School in 1959 and later attended Davidson County Community College. She worked as a seamstress for many years before operating her own daycare center, eventually earning her cosmetology license and opening her hair care salon.

Prior to worshiping at Cunningham Baptist Church, Mrs. Lewis was a devoted Sunday School teacher to children at Emmanuel Baptist Church where she also sang in the choir. Mrs. Lewis enjoyed teaching and studying the bible, singing, sewing, gardening, drawing, and painting.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Rosa Kearns, Ida Young, Margaret Kirkland, Jennie Steele, her brothers, Sylvester Kirkland, David Kirkland, and Robert Kirkland.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her husband of 61 years, Carl Franklin Lewis, and daughters Carlene Redmond (Maurice) of Mableton, GA, and Constance Cromartie (Michael) of Johns Creek, GA, grandchildren Wynton Redmond of Glendale, CA, Travis Redmond, Christopher Cromartie, Brandon Redmond, Calliah Cromartie, all of Atlanta, GA, and Chad Cromartie of Johns Creek, GA. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Desir, of Winston-Salem, NC, sister-in-law Shirley Jones Byrd, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, church family, and friends.
