Obituary
Mrs. Joyce Torrence is the daughter of the late Julius and Hetta Skeen and the wife of the late Elmer Torrence, whom she married in 1960.
She is the mother of Patricia Gripper (Charles), Eric Torrence, and Petrola Black (Barry). Joyce is also the proud grandmother of Cindy, Cathy, Amanda, Karyn, and Aaron and of seven great - grandchildren.
Mrs. Joyce Torrence is a graduate of Church Street School and Bennett College, North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University, and the University of Minnesota. From 1956 to 1960, she worked at Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., and from 1961 to 1998; she served as Guidance Counselor in the Thomasville City School System.
Joyce Torrence’s community service has been prolific. Her civic affiliations include: Chairman of the Human Relation Commission; Member of the Board of Directors of the American Relation Commission; Member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross; past member of the Thomasville Medical Center Board; member of the Davidson County Diversity Organization; member of Start Board of Directors; member of the Helen K. Kanoy Endowment Committee; member of Business and Professional Women; member of the N.C. Diabetic Association; member of the NAACP; member of Davidson County Improvement Council, and a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.. In her civic efforts, she has received the MLK Community Service Award.
She has also be an active member of the Central United Methodist Church. She has served on many committees in this area. Joyce was a 2005 honoree of the United Methodist Women, as well as a past president and vice-chair of the same committee. Mrs. Torrence has served in a number of other capacities as well. Included are the Chair of Nature Outreach, the Safe Sanctuary and Prayer Warriors; Evangelism/Visitation, Shepard/Witness; a Member of Leadership and Development; and CUMC Trustee; Reserved Member of Lay Members to the Annual Conference; Communication Coordinator; and Revival Committee Chair.
These are just some of the contributions that Mrs. Torrence has made to her community. She gets things done behind the scenes while exhibiting a passion for what she does.
