Edward Gerald McCauley, Sr., the last surviving child of the late Robert Lee McCauley and Macie Strickland McCauley, made his transition from this life on July 5, 2020. He was born on December 19, 1933 in Thomasville, North Carolina.
Edward, fondly called “Bumpsie” by family and friends, received his formal education within the Davidson County School system, graduating with the class of 1951 from Church Street School. He continued his education at Winston-Salem Teachers College, earning his Bachelor's of Science degree in elementary education in 1955. He enlisted in the United States Army where he served for eight years, including the Korean War prior to receiving an honorable discharge.
Edward accepted Christ at an early age and was a proud and active member of Union Baptist Church. His ministries were a spokesman for the church and encouraging & mentoring the youth.
Edward was a loving husband, a caring father, a proud grandfather, great-grandfather and a faithful friend to all who came to know him. He was the first African-American deliverer for UPS in 1965. He served his country, and continued to service his community as a Masonic Mason, 32nd Degree Mason, Eureka Lodge #7, Most Worshipful Grand Lodge State of PA AF&AM, Grand Master Walter Mills. He was always willing to assist others in any capability possible. He loved to visit the sick and shut-in, inspiring to lift their spirits until his health declined. Family and friends will always remember his gift of happiness, passing candy to everyone; earning his nickname “Candyman”.
Edward was proceeded in death by his parents, his siblings, his wife: Arbutus Sampson McCauley; and one grandson Malcolm McCauley.
He leaves to cherish his memories his three children, Dena McCauley of Allenton, PA, Edward McCauley, Jr. and LaTonya McCauley, both of Philadelphia, PA; six grand children; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Annie Ruth McCauley and Mary McCauley; goddaughter, Dana Hudson; special friends, Willette Smith, Stan Dallas, Big Shank and Lil Shank; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
