James was educated in the Clarendon County school system, where he graduated with the Class of 1966,  at Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, SC. Later James decided to move to North Carolina, he was the first person out of his family to leave South Carolina.

James affectionately known to his family as “Uncle Bookie” but to his friends and the community of Thomasville, he was known as “Piggly Wiggly.” James was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, who loved his family more than anything. He was a man a few words, but what he did said he would do, you could count on it. He was a kind hearted, loving man, who did anything for anyone. James was also a jokester; he adored making people laugh. He was a  mechanic, and a phenomenal caretaker for his wife over the years.
