The Obituary


Mrs. Mary Gertrude Spikes Ball was born on May 2, 1930, in Forest City, North Carolina to the late Mr. Love Spikes and Mrs. Maude Cleo Spikes Thompson. Her earthly life came to a close early Monday morning, May 31, 2021.


Mrs. Gertrude Ball attended Grahamtown elementary and high school. She graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was an elementary education instructor in Rutherford, Davidson and Guilford counties. Mrs. Gertrude Ball was a proud member of Central United Methodist Church for all her adult life.


She served as a member of the United Methodist Women’s Ministry and was honored in that ministry in 2009 and 2016, for her dedication and service. She also served on the Kitchen and Communion Steward Ministries.


Mrs. Ball was resident of Thomasville, North Carolina for 20 years before moving to High Point, North Carolina 50 years ago.


Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald M. Ball, Sr., two brothers, James Fred Thompson, Jr., and Horace Gerald Thompson, and one sister, Mildred Ronetta Thompson.


Surviving to cherish her loving memories are her two sisters, Mamie Thompson Gumbs, Doris Thompson Countess; her children; Trilby R. Ball, Gerald M. Ball, Jr., Sherry M. Rush (LJ Rush), Thomas V. Ball; grandchildren: Shawn Rush (Angela Rush) Christopher Rush, Geraldo Quinton Ball and Chelsea Anise Ball; great grandchildren: Jayden Rush, Kaitlyn Rush, Denaysia Arroyo, Malik Black, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
