Obituary

Matthew Oliver was born October 15, 1929 to the late Josephine Fretwell and Will Oliver. He departed this earthly life December 31, 2021 at Hospice of Piedmont.

A lifelong resident of Thomasville, NC., Matthew worked for Thomasville Furniture Industries for 30 plus years before retiring. He could build anything and enjoyed working with his hands.

A dedicated member of St. John AME Zion Church, Matthew served as van driver, trustee and choir member until his health would no longer permit.

Matthew was joined in holy matrimony for over 50 years to the late Betty Maxine Oliver. He was also preceded in death by three children; Tammy Johnson; Janice Johnson-Hunter and James Johnson.

Lovingly known as “Nub”, he came from a very large family of sisters and brothers: Catherine Oliver, John Edward Oliver, Clifton Eugene Oliver, Willie Mack Oliver, Mae Willie Oliver, James Lee Oliver, Lucille Oliver Kendrick. All whom are deceased.

“Nub” was an avid fisherman. He loved hitching his boat to the back of his 1954 Black Ford Truck to go out on the water to catch some fish. You could be sure when he returned, he was going to clean and fry them up for everyone to enjoy.

Everyone who knew “Nub” understood he and his Black truck were inseparable. The family joke was if his truck was sick so was, he…

“Nub” was a family man. His love for his wife, children and grandchildren was obvious and his joy could be seen and felt with his million-dollar smile and hearty laughter. We will miss him dearly.

He leaves to cherish his memory Four children; Brenda Hogan, Thomasville, NC; Sharon Downey (Jim), Thomasville, NC; Josie Marsh (John), Thomasville, NC; and Carmen Oliver, Thomasville, NC. One sister; Queen Ester of Boston, MA; Three sister-in-laws; Elizabeth Parker, Brooklyn, NY; Emma Hogan, Thomasville, NC; Shirley Hogan, Thomasville, NC, as well as a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
